Happy Spring Festival!

The Spring Festival, also known as Chinese New Year, is the most important traditional festival in China. It marks the beginning of a new lunar year and is celebrated with great enthusiasm and joy across the country. The festival usually falls between late January and mid-February, depending on the lunar calendar.

Preparations for the Spring Festival begin weeks in advance. People clean their homes thoroughly to sweep away bad luck and make way for good fortune. Red decorations, such as paper cuttings and couplets, are hung on doors and windows to bring prosperity and happiness. Families also gather to buy new clothes, prepare delicious food, and plan festive activities.

On New Year’s Eve, family members come together for a big reunion dinner. This is often the most important meal of the year, featuring dishes like dumplings, fish, and rice cakes, which symbolize wealth and prosperity. After dinner, families stay up late to welcome the new year, a tradition called "Shousui." Fireworks and firecrackers light up the sky, adding to the festive atmosphere.

During the festival, children receive red envelopes filled with money from elders, a symbol of blessings and good wishes. Streets are filled with lively performances like dragon dances and lion dances, which are believed to ward off evil spirits and bring good luck. Visiting relatives and friends is another key part of the celebration, where people exchange greetings and enjoy traditional snacks.

The Lantern Festival marks the end of the Spring Festival celebrations, usually held 15 days after New Year’s Day. People light colorful lanterns and solve riddles written on them, creating a magical and enchanting scene.
